So who would have thought that jumping from a tower 109m over a canyon would be exciting, and terrifying at the same time?!
Well I’m about to find out! As we get into the bus for the 15 minute ride from Queenstown, out to the jump location, I’m not going to lie, I was scared.
Biggest cliff jump in the world, attached to a few wires and a harness, that’s all that stops me from falling to my death. Should I do this??? HELL YEAH. After a few minutes of deciding what jump to do, I decide that if I’m going to do this, its gunna be the scariest one I can.
Pin Drop - hands locked, behind my back, standing next to the edge of the tower, the staff tell me to stand over the edge for some photos. They grab the back of my harness and hold me so I don’t fall over to early... Smile they shout! As they pretend to push me off the edge... Ha-ha I say, tears welling up in my eyes, really did you have to do that to me!!!
Ok the awesome staff, or should I say the smartass staff as all they do is try and scare you more then you already are, and you haven’t even jumped. They tell me I have to stand sidewards and slightly bend at the waist.
Now pretend to jump on to a square that isn’t there ... really?! That’s how you get me to jump! Do you see the same as me? It’s a 109m fall to the ground... Ok here I go...
1. 2. 3 OMG!!! I jumped and the hardest thing was not letting go of my hands and grabbing the rope to hold onto. Down I go 60m free fall before the swing kicks in and sends me 200m across the canyon, what a view, what a rush. Swing back across the canyon, my heart had stopped racing as I knew I have survived the fall, and the ropes worked.
Looking up with screams of excitement and a few choose words, that my mum would have slapped me for saying, I was so pumped and wanted to go again. But now I have to be winched back up to the tower, 109m back up to the tower I just jumped from.
After a few more cheeky little games and comments from the Canyon swing staff, they finally get my feet back on to solid ground, and with a huge smile on my face, I can say I have now just crossed of another thing on my bucket list.
