Sat 9 June - Official opening of the ski season in Queenstown! 10:29 AM on Mon 11 Jun 2012

Queenstown Coronet Peak and Canterbury Mt Hutt opened jointly for the first time on Saturday 9 June, with over a metre of snow in the past week creating perfect conditions, reaping the rewards of the largest, fully-automated high tech snowmaking system in the Southern Hemisphere.

Nearly 2500 skiers and boarders hit the South Island mountain slopes for the official start of this year's ski season. An overnight snowfall, cold temperatures and blue skies made for a “fantastic” season opening at Queenstown Coronet Peak ski area.

The New Zealand South Island is home to the magnificent Southern Alps, a wonderful mountain range that dominates the landscape and is home to a host of ski fields. Mt Hutt (Methven), Coronet Peak (Queenstown) and The Remarkables (Queenstown) are three of New Zealand’s premier Ski Areas in this region.

Queenstown is easily accessible with weekly direct Trans-Tasman flights or via Christchurch International Airport. The town itself is sophisticated and savvy, cosmopolitan yet casual and, best of all, everywhere you look is completely natural and unspoiled, and Base has one of the best backpacker hostel in town for you.

World-class facilities, superb conditions and a spectacular rollercoaster terrain make Coronet Peak New Zealand's most exciting destination for snow lovers of any ability. An easy 20 minutes from picturesque Queenstown, Coronet Peak is perfect for serious action or sharing great times. Home to premier events such as the Queenstown Winter Festival and the 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games, the après ski is as impressive as the slopes.

The Remarkables , just 45 minutes from Queenstown, features a fantastic network of progressive terrain parks with wide, gentle slopes for beginners of all ages and big mountain steeps for the experts. The Remarkables ski area is scheduled to open on June 16.

Treble Cone, closer to Wanaka, is scheduled to open on June 28 2012.

Whilst the character of each is very different, they are all framed against stunning scenic backdrops: lakes and rivers, lush green and gold farming plains and dense forest. The air is crisp and clean, the scenery amazing and the snow wonderful – so see you there soon!
