O-M-G!!! What an action packed 10 days we had!!!
I flew into Wellington straight after work, checked in at Base Wellington and straight into Basement bar to meet my fellow travel buddies.
Oh their “Jars” were soo tasty! Their Jager wall tempted us to do some shots and bombs of course! With the reasonable price, it kept us drinking and erm… well… I barely remember going back to my room that night! Lucky it was just basement of the hostel, otherwise I would have definitely got lost!
We stayed in a 4 bed dorm with ensuite, it had nice view of the city centre, clean bathroom, and wide enough space for all of us girls to open up our big suitcases.
We checked out, grabbed a continental breakfast while we were waiting for the bus, and off we go to the ferry terminal. The view during the trip was just beautiful! Some had breakfast and some had a nap... The 3 hour plus a bit of journey went smooth. Before I realised it was time for us to get off and finally meet our bus “Lewis” and driver “Cam”.
After nice and warm greetings from Cam, we started our trip to our first surprise stop: wine tasting Vines Village!! We got to taste 6 different Marlborough wines from Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot Noir. They do discounted prices for the Kiwi Experience passengers from $10/bottle. We surely enjoyed that and went to pick our last travel buddies from Nelson before we headed to Kaiteriteri, our first night stop. Kaiteriteri lodge has a whale bar where we had dinner. From pizza, fish & chips, to beef stews with mash, delicious! That was Karaoke night and CK, our guide for the tour, did melt one of locals’ heart with his voice...
We caught water taxi to do the beautiful Abel Tasman walk to the point called Anchorage.
Absolutely stunning weather and the walk is so peaceful. Beautiful rainforest and ocean view. We caught the water taxi back, the driver was great, told us all about the region and even let us drive the boat! And we spotted a few seals.
Then we headed to our next destination Westport. The Basils hostel is so lovely, nice and homey, and the best part, we had a fire place in our room!
Few of us started nice and early and went for a surf lesson. The weather was not so great to start with, we all thought the water would be quite chilly, but it wasn’t. After a bit of warm up and basics, off we jumped in the water and OMG!!!!!!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!! This surf lesson is one of my highlights of the trip. The wetsuit is only 3mm thick but it is warm enough. Surprisingly the water wasn’t that salty, almost like fresh water. Catching the waves was so much fun, I would have loved to stay there for a few more days to enjoy the surf.
After we washed our boards, we joined the rest of the group and we headed to Lake Mahinapua with a few stops including the Pancake rocks at Punakaiki and costume shopping at Greymouth for the party later that night. Lake Mahinapua is a stunning lake and one of our mates dared to jump in!
That night we stayed at an old west coast pub, where we had the dress up party. Our theme was Heroes and Villains, it’s amazing how travellers can come up with so many different ideas with limited budget! Great prizes for the best dressed.
