Heading East with Stray: Day 303:29 PM on Wed 26 Feb 2014

This morning we left Te Araroa at 8AM. I gave our host a big hug and a kiss and was sad to say goodbye to the family, their puppies and the colourfully decorated attic that became the girl’s dorm.

We took a short drive along the coast to East Cape Lighthouse – mainland New Zealand’s most easterly point: 700 steps to the top with views to nowhere that were absolutely breath taking – I even made friends with a Horse – I called him Ralph.

Next stop – Manuka Honey Factory to taste test some native honey before venturing to a local Macadamia nut farm – yummiest homemade ice cream I have ever tasted!

The drive towards our accommodation at Te Kaha was beautiful - The East Cape of New Zealand is a traveller’s hidden secret – lined with kilometres of surf coast, stray horses, sand dunes and a taste of how the locals really live.

We arrived out our beach front accommodation for the afternoon – Te Kaha Lodge. The local family were so welcoming and most of us home sick travellers enjoyed (maybe a little too much) the company of their family, their dog Boss and the baby kittens. The hostel had a trampoline – YAY – and free snorkel and kayak hire. With a beer in hand, a few of us jumped into a Kayak to explore the coastline and spot for Stingrays.

Rex our driver then took us to his favourite local pub for dinner – as per usual my Pool skills improved with beer intake. We then relaxed back at the hostel, watched the sunset and played a few drinking games.
